Active Care Forums
Active Care promotes and supports the professional development of people who run activities in care settings.
This work is hugely demanding, requiring a vast skill set including imagination, empathy, curiosity, patience and organisation. Care sector staff who run activities typically have little or no access to training in devising and delivering activities. Alive! Active Care was established in April 2014 to help address this need.
Since then Alive! has trained care staff in Bristol, BANES, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex. Through a series of skills development forums, the Active Care Project has given care staff the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver truly meaningful activities based on the interests of the individuals in their care, including those living with dementia.
How it works
The forums last three hours and include a 60-minute masterclass that will increase staff capacity to be able to facilitate activities that result in physical, mental, social and emotional benefits for residents. For example, techniques for doing life story work with older people or how to facilitate stimulating sensory activities.
Each forum will also include small-group discussions on relevant topics so attendees have the chance to meet their counterparts from other settings to share ideas and good practice. Discussions will include themes such as; what activities work well, overcoming the barriers to successful activities, how to use life stories and memories and keeping things fresh.
I find my job really hard. I find it hard to put all my theoretical knowledge and ideas into practice. This has inspired me to keep trying. Thank you so much!!
It is so valuable to be able to listen to the experiences of others. Thank you all!
We have picked up ideas and tips for new themes of activities, and better ways to enhance the ones we already deliver.
I have been very fortunate to attend 3 Alive! Active Care workshops. All these sessions have inspired and motivated me in providing activities for our members. These sessions enhance our skills and knowledge, I would recommend them to any organisation.
