The Beast from the East won't stop John!
Our amazing fundraiser, John Desmond (‘Desy’) will now run the Bristol Half Marathon to raise money for Alive. He was due to run the Bath Half in March, but it was unfortunately cancelled due to the snow and severe weather conditions!
Running in memory of Nick
John’s running in memory of Alive presenter, Nick Wilsdon. John knew Nick as a colleague and friend, whilst they were working together as teachers: ‘We got talking one day and he told me about his studying for a master’s degree in music therapy. I didn't appreciate at the time just how much joy and fun Nick brought to older people through his musical talent”.
“Nick was a wonderful member of the Alive team and we will always keep him in our hearts. He brought joy to hundreds of older people through his work for us, and the beautiful music he played on his fiddle sparked many happy memories for people living in care homes. We miss him a great deal, but he has left a legacy through his example and all the people with whom he connected”. Gill Roberts, Alive Regional Manager.
We’re thrilled John has already raised over £600 and was undeterred by the Beast from the East: “As they say, every cloud has a silver lining, since I have now signed up to run in the Bristol Half Marathon in September, giving me more time to raise money for what I can see is a great charity – it also gives me more training time and maybe more people will sign up and join me!”, said John.
We rely on donations
Money raised by John and other supporters of Alive provides us with vital funds to reach older people through creative activity sessions, to connect them to their local communities and to pass on our specialist knowledge through innovative care staff training. Every penny raised for us will ultimately transform the way older people are cared for in our society.
We wish John the best of luck with the rest of his training and fundraising. We will be there to cheer him on in September and anyone else who decides to join the Alive running team! Please Support John or why not sign up for the Bristol Half Marathon.
