Helping to shape equitable care for older people living with cancer and dementia.

A partnership between Alive and Bristol Pakistani Community Welfare Organisation to investigate health inequalities, with a particular focus on Black African & Caribbean and South Asian communities.

Designed to identify and record barriers within dementia and cancer care, Same Mind, Same Body is a two-year community-led partnership project between Alive and Bristol Pakistani Community Welfare Organisation (BPCWO), launched in 2026.

Supporting older people living with both cancer and dementia, the project builds trusted relationships with those from Black African & Caribbean and South Asian communities in particular, ensuring that their voices are used to shape service improvements and influence system change.

The project works closely with community organisations, healthcare professionals, carers, and people with lived experience to:

Foster meaningful relationships with those from underserved communities

Co-design culturally responsive and dementia-friendly improvements for patients with cancer

Investigate inequalities within both cancer and dementia care

Facilitate community conversations, focus groups, and co-design workshops

Share findings with stakeholders

Pilot new approaches for cancer and dementia care across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire

With generous funding from Macmillan CARE, Alive is one of 65 organisations chosen from across the UK to help improve the care and support for people living with cancer today, while also contributing to wider and long-lasting improvements in UK cancer care for the future.
