Invest in Bristol’s Caribbean Elders to keep them healthy, active and connected. Serving the communities of St Paul’s and Easton for nearly five decades, the Bristol Elders Groups are one of the city’s most important treasures.

Offering vital support to older people, we’re looking to raise funds to ensure their activities can continue. There are three ways to support:

A Legacy of Friendship & Support: Bristol Elders Groups

The Malcolm X Elders, Evergreens, and Golden Agers Caribbean Elders Groups are Bristol treasures. For nearly 50 years, they’ve provided a vital lifeline for over 150 Caribbean elders in St Paul’s and Easton. Here, they find friendship, support and activities that keep them healthy, active and connected in civic society.

These groups aren’t just social gatherings. They offer a structured programme chosen by the group members:

Seated exercise classes to stay fit and prevent falls.

Friendly competition through games and dominoes tournaments.

Computer clubs to bridge the digital divide.

Sewing circles to express creativity and share skills.

Health and wellbeing visits from agencies.

Guest visits from local dignitaries and national groups.

Intergenerational projects with students and young people transferring knowledge and understanding.

Beyond the Routine: Special Events and Outings

The groups also organise enriching trips and outings, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences. Imagine the joy when they visit our museums, attend cultural events, or simply explore new parts of Bristol together.

The Challenge: Keeping This Vital Programme Going

This year, thanks to generous Bristol funders, the groups, with the support of local charity Alive Activities, have secured £47,000. These funds cover essentials such as rent, refreshments, and a part-time key worker. However, to maintain their beloved activities that make such a difference, plus add new activities to their schedules such as art, poetry and gardening, we need to raise an additional £12,000. The groups are vital to the members.

I don’t feel lonely coming here…it really stops me from feeling alone.
The exercise keeps me fit and helps prevent me from falling.
I look forward to coming here every week. It’s great playing dominoes together.
